The construction of Belém Cultural Centre was decided in 1988 due to the need to host the Portuguese presidency of the European Union, and simultaneously to function as a centre for stimulating and driving cultural and leisure activities. After fulfilling this first function, it was transformed in a cultural and conference centre in 1993.
Currently, the CCB is home to the distinguished Berardo Museum, a reference museum in Lisbon, where the best of modern and contemporary art can be enjoyed.
